Floating - is a concept that is now associated with not only the physical recovery, relaxation of muscles and body tissues and embryonic therapy, but also with the art of meditation and self-knowledge. As a result of his work in the 1950’s and 1960’s, Dr. Lilly wrote more than 20 books, among which there were “The Center of the Cyclone”, “Programming and Reprogramming the Human Biocomputer”, “The Deep Self”), and by 1975 the manufacture of "sensory deprivation capsules" has begun. Currently there are floating centers exist in almost every large city in the US and Europe.
What is the essence of the process? You remain in a closed capsule with no inner or external lighting or sound, immersed in a solution of Epsom salt of such density that your body literally “floats” on the surface of the water. In addition to this, the water temperature is about 95 F, which corresponds to the temperature of the skin, and after a while, the Consciousness loses the sense of the boundaries of the body, when the gradual relaxation of muscles, joints and ligaments begins. This state is close to weightlessness, to the state, in which the Embryo experiences while being in the womb of the mother. Thus, the energy that is usually spent on the maintenance of balance, and is disseminated between the external sensing organs and gravity counteraction, becomes available to Consciousness for other purposes.
Even more interesting changes occur from the inside: relaxation of the body, breathing and psyche contributes to the transition to other modes of brain functioning: from the chaotic activity of the mind in the beta mode to the calm creative state of the alpha mode or deeper, to the meditatively conscious theta and delta frequency regimes, reaching which remains the unachievable task for many meditators, striving towards it for years. The change in brain activity opens up other internal resources, such as the vision of one's life tasks from the outside, going beyond the usual patterns of mind, new ideas and other points of view, the possibility of "meta-programming" of own programs and installations. We know about such effects of the practice of meditation, however, not all, and not always can actually enter into this state.
Consciousness and the body learns and remembers through flotation the technique of transition to another mode, which allows even a person not trained in meditation or spiritual practices, to gradually change, becoming calmer, brighter and more balanced. If you practiced, or know what is yoga-nidra, you know that the state of mind, that can be achieved in the deprivation capsule is similar to a long "yogic dream". This is the basis for various Self-studies: conscious dreams, ascension, affirmations and programming, recapitulation, visualization, audio meditations and just remaining in Silence and Emptiness, alone with your inner "Self".
Many yogis and practitioners of various spiritual traditions have passed long periods of seclusion, gaining a new level of Self-Consciousness. Within the framework of a city life, floating provides a unique opportunity for disassociation, micro-retreat, self-search and rethinking. Just like any other type of practice or a methodology, the floatation therapy – is a specific tool. The immersion profoundness, as well as the usage result solely depend on yourself. Nevertheless, the instrument itself, provided to us by sensory deprivation in any form –is reliable and multifaceted.
