These advice, as it is not difficult discern, largely come down to positive thinking. It may seem that it is something of the category of metaphysics. Like, you just have to believe in the general principle and not try to understand why it works. But Rick Hanson explains exactly why. Now I will try to retell as clearly.
I don't know about the rest of the world, but in our minds, the thought is material. In the sense that every thought and experience is essentially a combination of neural connections.
Often and intensively experiencing positive emotions, you can "teach" your brain to produce these emotions. Conversely, if you often will twist in your head the thought of all unnecessary stuff, this stuff will get into your head too often.
Frankly speaking, this simple and obvious idea shocked me. It turns out that every unpleasant thought I literally tread in my brain a convenient path for the next exactly the same unpleasant thought.
Rick Hanson does not leave us in trouble and advises us to do such things:
